Last weekend, me and my friend decided to take off on a road trip from Bangalore to Mumbai, his workplace, in his Indica Xeta. So we brought the road map, chalked out the route plan (the shortest possible, considering we wanted to reach asap) and left from Jayanagar, Bangalore at 6 am on Friday morning.
The distance to be covered was 1011 kms and we wanted a leisurely trip that is not too stressful. The distance, with short gaps, can be done in about 28 Hours.
The route we took was Bangalore- Nelmangala- Tumkur- Sira- Chitradurga- Haveri- Hubli- Dharwar- Belgaum- Kohlapur- Satara- Khambakti Ghat-Pune- Mumbai.
If you want to drive through the beaches and have time enough to drive about 250 kms extra, the Karwar-Goa route from Hubli is excellent. We, unfortunately, were short of time.
All the way we took National Highway 4. The stretch of road from Bangalore till Hubli was not good. Hence, we had to alter our original plan of reaching Belgaum by the first night, instead halted at Hubli. We checked in at Hotel Ananth residency located at the heart of Hubli, which provides both class and comfort. The food was average, but the place provides value for money.
Next morning, we left Hubli at 10 am after a good night sleep, since there was about 600 kms to be covered in a day. To our surprise, NH4 from Belgaum was in excellent condition and the speedometer showed above 100 mostly.
It was decided to take a break at Kohlapur, to visit the famous Mahalakshmi temple and shop for famous Kohlapuri chappals and saris. Other place to see include the Rankala lake and Hotel Victor Palace( A palace now converted to a star Hotel).
The next stop was Pune, where we reached by about 7 in the evening. It was a great relief to stop by Coffee day on the Pune-Mumbai highway and sip some Cappuchino! By then, the enthusiasm was being overshadowed by tiredness. Mumbai was another 2.5 hours away.
Finally, the last stretch of our memorable journey stared. We decided to take the expressway to reach Mumbai instead of the old NH4. And what a drive it was, the newly built roads, the illuminated tunnels and Lonavala seen up ahead with lights shimmering.
And just when I started wanting the journey to go on, we reached Mumbai; the city being a stark contrast to all the quieter places we passed on the way. Reality check, the memorable journey had ended. But the experience was worth cherishing a lifetime!
