Our team was running short of funds. So the manager's position in the team was done away with. That left the 4 of us. And on popular demand, I was anointed captain cum manager of the team. We were headed for Bhubaneswar (BBSR) to play a table tennis tournament. The arrangement suited us no end. We were like 4 free birds. From Aluva (near Kochi) we took a train to Vijawada. Our ticket and reservation was only till this point. There after we were to fend for ourselves. Doing the rounds of the station counters & touts, we soon figured 'without reservation' was the only way to go. We hopped on to the next BBSR bound train. Plonking ourselves next to the doors of the reserved compartment, the overnight journey had all the makings of a memorable experience. 'Purani Jeans' playing in our headphones, cigarettes and thoughts of reaching a new destination had us all excited.

On rail n road journeys, I always look forward to dawn. As darkness gradually gives away, the countryside starts coming alive. Sitting on the door steps that early morning, a scene started unfolding. We'd crossed Berhampur and were on the last stretch of our journey. Passing thru a narrow passage of rolling hills, a water body started emerging, and emerging, and emerging...till it became so big that it almost felt like a sea without waves. The sun rising from the eastern horizon completed a picture that I've carried ever since. Chilika lake remains a favourite todate.
