It's a non-stop celebration in Ahmedabad all the year around. Apart from the fun and frolic of the festivals of Gujarat, there's plenty to do. Head for the superbly comfortable multiplex cinemas in Gandhinagar or stretch your legs at the drive-in cinema. Darpana Academy of Performing Arts is one of the most prestigious performing arts academies in the city. It's amphitheater Natarani is a terrific performance venue overlooking the Sabarmati River and is one of the few places that hosts performances by celebrated artists. The National Institute of Design (NID) hosts art, craft, design and photography exhibitions by visiting artists as well as by its own students. Do, do catch them.

Science City A government initiative to draw more students towards science education, it has an IMAX 3D Theater, an Energy Park, a Hall of Science, an amphitheater, and dancing musical fountains. Timings: 3 pm-9 pm Kamla Nehru Hill Garden Zoological Park Just beside the Kankaria Lake, it is well known for albino animals, especially a breeding stock of albino porcupines. It also has a huge number of birds, mammals and reptiles. The Natural History Museum here has dioramas and stuffed birds. Aquarium and Park (Kankaria Lake) The lake offers a host of fun activities to keep your kids as well as you going for a long, long time. There's an aquarium where children can enjoy the experience of going in a submarine while watching a variety of fish. There's also the Balvatika Amusement Park where kids can be their boisterous best. Kite Museum Housed in the Sanskar Kendra (Bhagatcharya Road) it celebrates Ahmedabad's colourful kite festival and if you are traveling with children, it is an absolute mandatory stop.
Nightlife
Ahmedabad has a very good night life. While the days are hot during the summer months between April to June the nights are cool. All restaurants and eating joints are open till midnight. Often referred to as the ‘city of ice cream’ most ice cream parlours have crowds milling around them till well past midnight especially during summers. Stalls dishing out Indian and Chinese fast food, sweets and tea or coffee of all kinds at affordable prices are seen everywhere. Busy areas like the Teen Darwaja have non vegetarian food stalls dishing out tasty food and savouries almost all through the night during the holy festival of ramzaan (ramadaan) and upto midnight at other times. For the upmarket crowd the city is full of multicuisine restaurants, coffee shops and food courts right from the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar (SG) Highway, Chimanlal Girdharlal (CG) Road and Ashram Road in the west, to Naroda Highway on the east, to Chandekheda and Gandhinagar in the north, to Vasna and Maninagar in the south. When in Ahmedabad how can one miss a visit to Vishalla the village themed restaurant where one can have a leisurely meal squatting on mats in true village ambience with traditionally dressed waiters serving loads of finger licking Gujarati courses after taking in a puppet show reclining on charpoys (Indian rope cots) and also a visit to the vessels museum in the premises. The city boasts of many multiplexes (cinema halls) which have their last shows till 10 pm ending at midnight. The shopping malls give a great shopping experience till almost 10 pm. One can also have a great shopping experience on CG Road with its chain of fancy stores selling global brands. For traditional textiles Law Garden is the place to be. The city’s two lakes - Kankaria Lake and Vastrapur Lake – offer pleasant evening stroll options. One could also stroll and enjoy the cool breeze on one of the six bridges spanning the breath of the Sabarmati river or along the Sabarmati riverfront. The city’s many gardens, open upto 10 pm, is another option for leisurely evening walks with Law Garden being the most coveted one. On the New Years’ eve and Independence Day (August 15th) people throng well into the night on CG Road. Navratri the colourful festival of nine nights during September/October has young and old dancing in colourful traditional attire till day break with gay abandon to the beats of drums and orchestra much like an open air discotheque. The popularity of ‘Garba’ is well known across the nation today. It is the time to be in Ahmedabad. Try not to miss the traditional dances in the National Institute of Design (NID) campus or the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) campus. However being closed for the public at large, you’d would need an invite. All the year round there are events galore. Ahmedabad also boasts of the longest running festival of classical Hindustani music called Saptak for thirteen nights in a row every year beginning from 1 January where stalwarts of Hindustani classical music perform for a select audience open through personal invitation only. The kite festival on 14 January every year attracts hordes of foreigners with evening dance dramas on the Sabarmati riverfront. Don't miss the tasty "undhiyu"(a Gujarati curry) prepared in all homes and available in all eating joints during this time. The students’ festival called ‘Chaos’ organised by students of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), the top most national management institute, also attracts huge crowds with dance music and dramas scheduled during the evening. Also SPICMACAY organises several programmes all through the year. Diwali is the time when you can see all kinds of beautiful fireworks through the night. The next day is the Gujarati New Year day. So you can see the whole town bedecked in lights during the weeks before Diwali right upto the New Year. If you are religious or want to see the temple decorated at night then visit some of the famous temples in the city. Most temples are open till 9 pm and weekend evenings have people thronging for worship. The friendly people of Gujarat invite you for a visit to experience and savour their cuisine and rich tradition.
