Faithful Lover's Return

Tourists make a beeline for Bharatpur in winter, when the Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary is full of exotic, foreign winged visitors who migrate here from across the globe. The other seasons too have their own attractions. Spring is the time for courtship and nesting, when all the species become lovebirds. The rains are for breeding and rearing young, with nests across the parklands brimming with mottled and speckled eggs of many colours. But there's no doubt that it's in the late, deliciously cold winter that the quantum of birdsong rises to a raucous crescendo.
Once the hunting ground of the Maharaja of Bharatpur, the scrub, swamps and marshes of the 29-sq km Keoladeo Ghana was later turned into a bird sanctuary, and now ranks among the most visited in India. This is manifest in the huge fan club of homo sapiens who migrate here in winter as well to give their feathered buddies a rousing welcome.

 Bharatpur
Deeg
(37 km)

This is a charming Rajasthani town with a massive fort and a magnificent old palace. Deeg was the second capital of the state of Bharatpur and it was at this town that Raja Suraj Mal defeated a combined Mughal and Maratha army of some 80,000 men. Charged with his victory, he attacked the Red Fort in Delhi eight years later and carried away an entire marble building that can be seen in Deeg today. The massive 92-ft high walls of the fort with its 12 bastions, are fun to explore. Some of the bastions still have their cannons in place. Suraj Mal?s palace is equally fascinating. The caretaker will tell you many stories, including how the Maharaja carried away a huge, black stone bed from Delhi for his queen, only to realise later that it was a platform on which dead bodies were prepared for burial. Check out the magnificent stuffed tiger shot by the Maharaja. There is an old Hanuman Mandir with a secret passage to the king?s bedroom so that he could visit the temple before he got dressed in his daily finery. The intricate and ancient water fountain system around the central tank still works without a flaw. However, it is only turned on for local festivals.
