Male Mahadeshwara Betta
At 160 km from BR Hills, the hills of Male Mahadeshwara Betta are no excursion. But then again, visits aren?t usually made here at the drop of a hat, and the occasion is seldom very cheerful. For Male Mahadeshwara is no God of Small Things. Whenever Veerappan abducts someone, the hostage?s family rushes to this hill-shrine in supplication. Their object of worship is an aspect of Lord Shiva as Mahadeshwara, greatly revered by local tribals. The ?Male? has nothing to do with the masculinity of the deity but is derived from ?Malay?, meaning mountain. His hill-temple attracts many devotees. The devotees (called Devara Guddaru) have a unique form of prayer, where they smear their foreheads, eyebrows and necks with ash and dance with cymbals in their hands. If you are lucky, you might get to witness this magical spectacle called ?Kamsale Nritya? or ?The Dance of the Cymbals?. A good time to visit MM Hills is during Mahashivratri.
