Hippie Haven
Life in McLeodganj stretches far beyond the monastery, and is at its liveliest in the main street. Sitting over a bowl of steaming hot noodles, you can exchange gossip with Wilfred, who?s from Canada, or Sue-Ann who?s decided she?ll stay here for as long as her money lasts, or the authorities find out, and she?s deported back to England. It?s a strange irony that Robin, who?s Tibetan, and who owns the restaurant, is better dressed than either Wilfred or Sue-Ann, but that may be because they?ve sold all their worldly possessions on the pavement outside Robin?s restaurant, and live and sleep in the only clothes they now possess.
Used clothes aren?t the only treasures you?ll find in McLeodganj. If you?re a magpie, you could pick your way through corals or amethysts, rubies or topaz, to find a real gem (pun intended). At the weaving centre, if you stay long enough, you can have a woollen carpet woven to your design, and choice of colours, failing which you could rummage through the rolls to find one that suits your needs. |
