Edinburgh

(United Kingdom)

Auld Reekie has spruced herself up into Britain's most liveable city.

Edinburgh is unique among Scotland's cities. Tourism, its proximity to England, and its multicultural population set it apart. There's up-to-the-nanosecond dance clubs in 15th-century buildings and firebreathers outside Georgian mansions: this is a place that knows how to blend ancient and modern.

Its superb architecture ranges from ancient churches to monumental Victorian masterpieces - all dominated by a castle on a precipitous crag in the city's heart. Pick any street to stroll - you'll be wowed by sudden vistas of looming battlements, cold volcanic peaks and hills steeped in memory.

Caution
Dangers & Annoyances

Lothian Rd, Dalry Rd, Rose St and the western end of Princes St, at the junction with Shandwick Pl and Queensberry and Hope Sts, can get a bit rowdy on Friday and Saturday nights after people have been out drinking. Calton Hill offers good views during the day but is probably best avoided at night.

Women should avoid crossing The Meadows (the park that lies between Old Town and Marchmont) alone after dark - several women have been attacked here. And be aware that Coburg St in Leith is a notorious red-light district - lone women here at any time of day might be approached by kerb crawlers.

Airport Security

There are new rules governing the carriage of gels and liquids in cabin luggage, as part of counter-terrorism measures. Liquids such as toiletries must be carried individually in containers no greater than 100ml, which in turn must be placed in a transparent, resealable zip-lock bag (no bigger than 20cm x 20cm). This will need to be easily removed from your cabin baggage (max 56cm x 45cm x 25 cm) and x-rayed separately. These requirements, in place for the forseeable future, will mean some delay and disruption at airports and travellers should plan accordingly. For more information about the restrictions visit the UK Department for Transport website www.dft.gov.uk/airportsecurity.
