Kumta is a small coastal town known for its sandalwood handicrafts. After a ride through the bazaar where you can shop for crafts, drive westwards for over 2 km to the beach. Kumta Beach has an unspoilt natural charm ? a stretch of sand and rocky hillocks. The Shanteri Kamakshi and Mahalsa temples in the town are worth a visit too. Kumta is a big transport hub. Come here for onward travel to Yaana and other places in interior Uttara Kannada.
Kumta?s Hotel Pandurang International (Tel: 08386-621538-40; Tariff: Rs 300-800) is right on NH17. It?s a good option if Gokarna?s hotels are full up. Its Pandura Restaurant serves vegetarian South Indian meals.
