(Jammu & Kashmir)

Gateway to Kashmir

Jammu has been for ever tucked into the shadows of the ever resplendent Srinagar, but has her own charm or grace. The snowcapped, mighty Himalayas over look hill town. A recent entrant in the tourist agenda, this city, on the banks of Tawi is more of a business hub and home to the Pahari school of painting. It is dotted with ancient temples including the Vaishno Devi temple which sees thousand of people during the season.

Dotted with temples it is the leading centre for the Pahari school of painting. A busy trading centre, it also plays host to a steady stream of pilgrims heading to the shrine of Vaishno Devi.

Entertainment
There are a surprising large number of options available. Abhinav Theatre (Canal Road) stages cultural programmes and dramas regularly. Information on cultural programmes organised in the city can be obtained from the J&K Academy here. Theatres are aplenty showing mainly Hindi films. Clubs that are open to non-members are Amar Singh Club (near Bikram Chowk; Tel: 433085) and Jammu Club (near Tawi Bridge; Tel: 547061, 549213). River Tawi is famous for a variety of fish like mahaseer, catfish, labio, and mahi. Permits for fishing can be obtained from Deputy Director of Fisheries, Jammu. The Tourist Reception Centre should help you get this.
Nightlife
Jammu sleeps early but there are in-house bars in hotels. Do check out the Pavilion, a full service bar at the Hotel Asia at Jammu Tawi (Ph: 0191-435757-60).
