Kashmiri carpets are showpieces of the region's craftsmanship. These carpets are world renowned for two things they are handmade and they are always knotted, never tufted. Namdas are less expensive than carpets: they are colourful floor coverings made from woolen and cotton fibre which have been manually pressed into shape. Papier-mrays, boxes, pen stands and letterholders are another specialty. The amount of gold paint used and the finish of the product determine the price of these. J&K Government Arts Emporium near the Tourist Reception Centre on Residency Road is a reliable place to pick up these and other handicrafts. If you can haggle and see through fakes, then enter any of the shops on Vir Marg, Raghunath Bazaar and Hari Market. These are good hunting grounds also for traditional Dogra jewellery, embroidery and crewel work, the legendary Pashmina shawls, and dry fruits, chiefly walnuts and almonds.
Jammu is also known for the superlative quality of its Basmati rice, rajma (red beans), aampapar (dried and candied mango peel), and anardana (dried pomegranate seeds).
