Historic Port City

Kochi. The name itself conjures up images of Chinese fishing nets, spices, ayurveda and ships sailing out into the ocean. The ever vibrant, ever developing and the ever booming city! It appears to be growing daily. Distinctly different from other parts of Kerala, Kochi is everybody's delight. It is an ideal blend of the traditional and the modern. Skyscrapers and bustle of Ernakulam stand in sharp contrast to the colonial charm of Fort Kochi. The only common factor between both the areas are the red painted city buses, the yellow hooded autorickshaws and friendly people. From time immemorial, Kochi has played host to guests from far off lands. The Arabs, the Chinese, the Dutch, the Portuguese, the French, the British, all came here for trade. Though for different reasons, follow their footsteps for a peek into this slice of God's Own Country.

MG Road is the main artery of Ernakulam town. Though it has been widened, the rush hour traffic jams are real killers. No mega malls here, but all major brands have outlets on the MG road. The state emporia Kairali here is the ideal place for picking up local handicrafts, textiles, and bric-a-brac. Do check out the gold and diamond centres along this road. Weddings are huge occasions in Kerala, and people had to go all over the place to shop. The wedding centres by Alukkas, offer everything which goes into the wedding package. From dress materials to jewelry. The Greater Kochi Development Authority has a shopping complex where you can pick up souvenirs and mementos. It is the place to shop for imported goods too. Jew Street, Mattanchery is dotted with quaint shops selling antiques, artifacts, and furniture. The variety of antiques that you find here astound the mind. Make sure you pick at least a tiny piece of work to commemorate your experience here. Right next to GCDA, you have Bay Pride Mall, that pride of being one of the first mall in Kochi. Apart from the Abaad Food Court and Barista, this mall is home to major brands like Home and Beyond, Levis etc. Be it saris, dress materials, men and children's wear and upholstery you must visit Kalyan Silks - known to be the largest sari shop in Asia, is on Hospital Rd and Jayalakshmi on MG Road. For authentic Kerala fabrics, handlooms and traditional wear, visit Kasavu Kada, behind Fine Arts College, in Kochi. For trinkets, junk jewellery, bags and shoes drop by at Convent Junction at Ernakulam. Look out for Goodwill - a popular store for college goers and fashion followers. This is a place to pick up ear rings, bracelets and the list goes on. Convent Junction also has some more fashion outlets, shoe shops etc. Broadway is equivalent to Crawford market in Mumbai or Sarojini Nagar in Delhi. Here, you can buy anything under the sun from household items, spices, condiments, souvenirs, books for your kids, stationary etc. You can pick up rare earthy Kerala pottery from Broadway. You can even visit Fort Kochi to pick up souvenirs and antique items. Kochi also has Fab India, which is a good place to buy clothes and household items. Also, Varkala's, 9 to 10 and Nilgiris are popular supermarkets that come handy when it comes to daily items, fresh fruits, veggies and non-vegetarian food.
