Historic Port City

Kochi. The name itself conjures up images of Chinese fishing nets, spices, ayurveda and ships sailing out into the ocean. The ever vibrant, ever developing and the ever booming city! It appears to be growing daily. Distinctly different from other parts of Kerala, Kochi is everybody's delight. It is an ideal blend of the traditional and the modern. Skyscrapers and bustle of Ernakulam stand in sharp contrast to the colonial charm of Fort Kochi. The only common factor between both the areas are the red painted city buses, the yellow hooded autorickshaws and friendly people. From time immemorial, Kochi has played host to guests from far off lands. The Arabs, the Chinese, the Dutch, the Portuguese, the French, the British, all came here for trade. Though for different reasons, follow their footsteps for a peek into this slice of God's Own Country.

Travel Tips
  • Backwater trips and farm areas will have more mosquitoes than Ernakulam town. But is advisable to carry mosquito repellants while traveling to Kochi.

  • Carry comfortable footwear, preferably water-proof.

  • Autos are prone to overcharging in the more touristy side of town. Usually in Ernakulam town, you may not have bargain too much. Bargaining is more needed in areas like Fort Kochi, where tourist population is higher.

  • Buses are also a good choice. Most areas in Kochi are well connected by the 'Red Buses'. Usually the hotel/ home stay owner, shop keepers or even passengers waiting at the bus stop can let you know which bus to take to a particular destination.

  • Hiring private taxis in Kochi is the best bet. The private taxi operators are usually very reliable; the drivers are friendly and will take keen interest in showing you around the city, shopping etc.
