The famous URUS of Beypore
The small coastal town of Beypore has been renowned for centuries as a shipbuilding centre. It's still famous for its uru, the country craft built by traditional shipbuilders known as Khalasis. Buyers from the Middle East still come all the way to Beypore to place orders for urus.
Beypore can be got to by taxi from Kozhikode (Rs 75). Walk past the skeletons of huge boats and junk shops selling ancient anchors, until you reach the harbour at the mouth of the Chaliyar River. There, under thatched roofs, are large boats being worked on by wizened old Khalasis. In the off-season, you can catch the town's toy boat maker, who puts little ships of the most intricate designs into bottles. Model boats can be bought from Kairali Emporium. Those made of teak can set you back as far as Rs 15,000 and those from coconut just Rs 500. |
