Where to Eat
There's nothing to beat the satisfaction of growing your own fruits and vegetables. The home-grown potatoes, pumpkins, and beans cooked with mutton and chicken is the staple. Momos is the region's most popular dish, but do try other Tibetan offerings like thukpa (noodles cooked in mutton soup) and skieu (made with veggies, mutton and flour). And end every meal with salted butter tea though you will have to develop a taste for it.
Thanks to brisk tourism, Leh has a fair number of hotels serving all forms of cuisine. Two must-trys are Himalaya Caf or Tibetan and Shangri La for Korean cuisines. Dreamland Restaurant is a decent multicuisine joint. Another good bet is Ladakhi Kitchen in the Main Market. Besides these, you must visit the Pumpernickel German Bakery for fresh bread and cookies. |
