Tarzan Territory

Whatever was Outlook Traveller thinking of, sending a Mallu into the rainforests during the rains? Well, it was inspired thinking. It proved that Kerala still holds some surprises up her green sleeves that can get under the skin of even beauty-hardened denizens of God's Own Country.
Almost every inch of the mist-wrapped undulating hills of Wayanad have coffee, pepper and cardamom growing on them, hedged by lush rainforest that stuns the eye with its varied shades of green.
Wildlife truly roams free in Wayanad, whose forests share borders with Bandipur and Mudumalai. This vast stretch of protected earth is a haven of freedom for the fauna of Malabar and the Nilgiris. Add to that the relative lack of development of Wayanad district, and you get lots of pristine environment unblemished by the excesses of civilisation.
So if you're sick of civilised courtesies and sham creature comforts, head to the twin jewels of Vythiri and Lakkidi, tucked into the wild beauty of the forests of Wayanad, across the state border in Kerala.

Where to Stay
The leading resorts in the region and the DTPC have joined hands recently to strengthen Wayanad?s touism potential jointly. At the DTPC office ask for the brochure that lists the district's holiday resorts and tourist features. Your best bet is to head for the hotels deep within the forests. Kalpetta has some very good options, plus there are small hotels in Sulthan Bathery. If the hotels in Vythiri are too steep for your budget, you'll find plenty of options in Kalpetta, just 10 km away up NH212.
Babu Varghese's Green Magic Nature Resort
It has a collection of treehouses and eco-lodges in Vythiri. Reaching the treehouse, 25 m above ground level, will be your first adventure. If you're wondering where the rope ladder has disappeared, think again. You reach the treehouse using an ingenious self-propelling elevator made of cane and counter-balanced by a weight of water. You literally haul yourself up. Don?t expect to be allowed to take in any plastic, including those bottles of Bisleri mineral water. As Varghese constantly exhorts his guests, leave nothing behind in the forest and take away nothing but memories.

Hotel Green Gates
The best place to stay in Kalpetta is Hotel Green Gates just off NH212. Despite its 3-star status and location on a landscaped hillock, the luxury hotel is surprisingly down to earth and its hospitality, genuinely warm. It has spacious well-furnished rooms, a health club, an ayurvedic spa, games parlour and an amusement park. The hotel organises excursions to and camping in Chembra, Edakkal, Kuruvadweep, Pakshipathalam and other destinations in Wayanad.
