Heritage Village By The Sea
One very good reason for driving down to the temple town of Mahabalipuram is the drive itself. Come down the hi-tech East Coast Road. On your left are glimpses of surf breaking on endless coastline, interspersed with stretches of casuarina groves and all along the road, food courts, amusement parks and art villages. Mahabalipuram, also called Mammallapuram, is an ancient seaport named after Mammala or Narasimha Varman I, the Pallava ruler who set up his capital here and established a centre of sculpture and art. Its history dates to the early 5th century when it was a thriving port. Mahabalipuram contains India's oldest examples of Dravidian buildings and sculpted rock-panels. The striking feature of the sculpture here is that it is all monolithic - giant works carved from single rocks. The fabulous and ancient carvings make the town an acknowledged UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Perumal Temple, Krishna's Butterball and Arjuna's Penance are among a number of sights clustered along a short walk west of the bus stand. East Raja Street south of the bus stand becomes West Raja Street and leads to the ASI Museum, the Mahishasuramardini Cave, Shiva and Adivaraha temples, and further south to the sculptor's village and the Pancha Ratham. Resorts, guest houses, restaurants and curio shops are all north of the bus stand, on lanes leading east to the beach off East Raja Street, and are clustered around Othavadai Street and Othavadai Cross in particular. The big seaside resorts are further north from here, off the ECR. The Tamil Nadu Hotel and Tourist Office are in this stretch.
