Melting Pot

If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home, from the very earliest days when man began the dream for existence, it is Mumbai! These words of Romain Rolland say it all. Mumbai is the nagaria of dreams. People come in from all over the country to make their life here, some succeed and move to the tallest and posh-est of homes others are reduced to nothing and pass their nights on railway platforms. It is also a city of contrasts. Huge contrasts.A strong regional movement turned the name of the city and its institutions around, Bombay became Mumbai, Victoria terminus became Chattrapati Shivaji terminus and a lot many more but the heart of Bombay has not changed. It will take you into its folds no matter what your status or signature.

At a Glance
Mumbai is located on the Salsette Island, off the west coast of the Arabian Sea, in Maharashtra, western India. Its flanked by land on three sides and the sea on the west, this is what makes it an important port. Mumbai in fact, is the only place to have a natural harbour.
When to Visit:
Being sea-locked, Mumbai has temperate weather, the weather never ever really gets chilly here, at the most temperatures would drop to 12 degree Celsius. The summers (mid march to mid June) are hot and humid, with temperatures ranging right up to 38 degree Celsius. Winters set in only in November and last till January end. The rains last three long months -- June to August ? and some parts of the city especially the north, do tend to get flooded with consistent rains. Plan your trip keeping this in mind.
Orientation & Getting Around:
Mumbai is probably the best-connected city, you have a very regular and clean bus service BEST that connects Mumbai right across. They have a few AC buses too that ply from Colaba to Andheri, very comfortable on a hot and humid day, and not that expensive either. The two train lines Western railway connecting Churchgate through to Andheri and Virar and the central Railway connecting CST to Thane and Kalyan and Neral are very efficient, and probably the cheapest way of getting around. The third line, Harbour line, connects CST to New Bombay, CBD, Panvel, Andheri and Bandra. This line however is not very punctual and the first to go under with a heavy downpour. However try and avoid the office hours on western and central lines. Taxis are available through the night, though you will have to a pay a surcharge of 25 per cent after midnight. Most taxi drivers are extremely friendly and will not jip you. Mumbai also offers an AC taxi service called cool cabs, for those of you who would prefer it. Auto rickshaws are yet another means of transportation; however they have licenses to operate only within and beyond the suburbs of Bandra.
