Melting Pot

If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home, from the very earliest days when man began the dream for existence, it is Mumbai! These words of Romain Rolland say it all. Mumbai is the nagaria of dreams. People come in from all over the country to make their life here, some succeed and move to the tallest and posh-est of homes others are reduced to nothing and pass their nights on railway platforms. It is also a city of contrasts. Huge contrasts.A strong regional movement turned the name of the city and its institutions around, Bombay became Mumbai, Victoria terminus became Chattrapati Shivaji terminus and a lot many more but the heart of Bombay has not changed. It will take you into its folds no matter what your status or signature.

Shopping
When it comes to shopping, no bag is big enough to fill your thrills up with. Right from the famous Fashion Street to exclusive boutiques and extremely chic ethnic markets, Mumbai is a feast for shoppers. One can shop for export quality apparel at absolutely rock bottom prices at fashion street, the Mecca for fashion crazy. Remember the golden rule here is to start bargaining from half the figure that the shopkeeper has quoted. Come monsoon the stuff here gets cheaper, you can also get a decent price when they are just opening shops, at about 11 am. Any of the five star shopping complexes will sell everything from high-fashion garments from the ramps of Milan to handmade art from an obscure tribal hamlet. Go to the Oberoi shopping arcade for cheap leather stuff. Chor Bazaar is famous for antiques, though we suggest you go there with someone who can tell a real antique from a fake one. Every serious shopper must visit the Bombay Store (Pherozeshah Mehta Road, Fort), Westside and Globus outlets across Mumbai. Where Bombay store is all about stuff for the home and office and gifts, the other two are perfect for personal buys. We also suggest Fab India that now has three stores in Bombay, at Fort, Khar and Mulund for the very Mumbai friendly cotton clothes. The World Trade Centre (Cuffe Parade) complex houses all the state emporiums and makes for interesting shopping, most often there would be one or the other exhibition to visit here too, like the Society Interiors in October or Food Show in February. The Cottage Emporium on Shivaji Road (Colaba) is a one-stop-shop for handicrafts from all over India. Besides these, Mumbai is dotted with designer stores like Melange (Kemp's Corner), Crossroads (Breach Candy) and Courtyard (Minoo Desai Marg) selling hi-fashion and designer wear. Malad in North Mumbai has seen a few new malls opening upto, these are better designed than any other mall in proper Bombay, in fact the mall Inorbit has one floor dedicated to a food court and gaming zone only, the perfect place to go to if you are traveling with your kids.Shop for all your footware at Linking Road in bandra, the street shops may not have the best quality in terms of life of the footware, but the designs are quite neat and mean.
