There is no dearth of good restaurants in Mumbai, every single street will have a couple of places to talk about. Plus you have restaurants popping up every other day. Being seen at new places has become a fashion statement Mumbaiites love to make. It's very difficult to pin down one specific speciality cuisine Mumbai offers, it has it all from Thai, to Italian, to Mexican to Guajarati thalis and snacks and the mild and subtly flavoured Parsi food.
Mumbai also has a thriving street food culture, and the stalls along Chowpatty are where you can get the real taste of tongue-tickling bhelpuris, vadapaavs, pani puris and dosas. There's Khao Galli near Nirmala Niketan behind the Income tax building that's known for the best chaat's and fast food. Then there's Elco market, where the best pani puri, rangda patties and Bombay sandwich can be dug into. For authentic Parsi food, check out Jimmy Boy (Fort area) order the dhan shak, and chicken farcha and don't forget to end the meal with their lagan nu custard.For those of you who like caramel custard, Light of Asia is the best place to dig into it, this ones stands opposite GPO, VT.For kebabs, chicken rolls and other tandoori delicacies, there are Bade Miya, Ayubs and Delhi Darbar (all in Colaba), one can aklso check out gulshan in Crawford market.Just Biryani has outlets all over Bombay, but we prefer the one at Oshiwara the best. The food outlet is owned by the same guys who used to own Only Fish, now called Oh Calcutta, head here for good Bengali Khanna. Seaofood specialists are Mahesh Lunch Home (Cowasji Pate Street, Fort) are Trishna (Kala Ghoda) in the south of Bombay and Gazalee in the north, Parle to be precise, try the tandoori crabs here, they are the best we've tried so far. Lobsters are rcommended in both places. For the best and most delicious Gujarati delicacies Swati Snacks (Tardeo Road) is a must visit. For a filling lunch, order a thali at Rajdhani (Kalbadevi) or head to Golden Thali at Charni Road, both serve rajasthani fair, which might be a little too much for one person to finish if a small eater. But it's simple food that's wonderfully easy on the stomach. Bandra and Juhu areas have some plush restaurants where you can dine in style. Check out Olive Bar & Restaurant that also serves awesome breakfast, (Union Park, Khar) and Basilico for pizzas and Italian food, for snacks Candies is known it has a branch in Palli Hill as well as reclamation. Equally good is Churchill Caf Colaba); the desserts are simply awesome. For Chinese food try Lings Pavillion (Colaba), China Gate (Bandra) and Chinese Room (Napean Sea Road). You could even give Five Spice (Fort) and Dynasty (Santa Cruz) a shot. One of the favourites is Fat Kong, a road side eatery that probably does more business than any other place.The best thai food can be had at Thai pavilion at the President. Cafeopold (Colaba) is one of the oldest cafes in Central Mumbai. It's the best place to chill out with friends over a couple of beers. A famous restaurant and pub on Marine Drive, Jazz By The Bay is know for its great buffets and live band music. More than often one gets to sing along as well, as there is karaoke night at least once a week. It's also a good place to catch a quick soup-sandwich-salad-dessert buffet lunch. For some sinful desserts, head to Cream Centre or New Kulfi Centre (both on Chowpatty), they also serve sugar free kulfi's now.You must also curl your tongue around the ice-creams served by Natural. Containing no preservatives, you can taste real fruit in them. Talking of food in Bombay will not end without the sumptuous pan, try Voila at Fort, and muchchad panwalla at Kemps Corner. |
