The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's architect and foster brother, Nawab Fidai Khan, created the Mughal Gardens at Pinjore in the 17th century. Legend has it that the Pandavas rested here during their long exile, and the old Bhima Devi Temple plus an ancient baoli in Pinjore town also has associations with the five brothers of the Mahabharata.
The complex was renamed as a mark of respect in the memory of the former Maharaja of Patiala, Yadavindra Singh, who restored the gardens after they fell into disarray along with the Mughal Empire. A mini zoo and well laid-out gardens, including a Japanese one, decorated with fountains which are turned on only on weekends, are refreshingly pretty after the long drive past grotty kasbas on the highway. Haryana Tourism looks after the gardens today and you can stay at their Budgerigar Motel here if you like. But look towards the distance and you?ll see the purple-green hills of Kasauli beckoning, sending a seductive message... don't tarry too long here, Himachal awaits.
