Ooty
(Tamil Nadu)
Pride of the Niligris
The train chugs out from near Mettupalayam and winds its way around the verdant greens, passing through many tunnels. Halfway uphill, if you put your hands out, you can actually feel the mist. And you get one of the best views of the valley. Welcome to Ooty, the Queen of Hills, the Scotland of the East.
At a Glance
Ooty is up in the Nilgiri Hills, the Blue Mountains in Tamil Nadu. The nearest major rail head and airport is Coimbatore about 90 km away from Ooty.

The tourist season starts in April and continues through June and then the rain sets in. Ooty becomes sought after again from September through November. During the season, Ooty is crammed with people and cars and everyone is out to fleece you. So, if you do not mind the rain and think you could manage with raincoats and umbrellas, then Ooty is waiting.
