Pride of the Niligris

The train chugs out from near Mettupalayam and winds its way around the verdant greens, passing through many tunnels. Halfway uphill, if you put your hands out, you can actually feel the mist. And you get one of the best views of the valley. Welcome to Ooty, the Queen of Hills, the Scotland of the East.

Quick Getaways from
 Ooty
Coonoor

Coonoor is enroute Ooty. A pretty hill town, ten kilometres away from Ooty, Coonoor is not commercialsed yet. The main attraction here is the Sims Park, established in 1874. The fine lawns, the collection of rare plants and trees on the steep slopes make Coonoor beautiful. The colonial era has left its mark in this with the scenic waterfalls here are named after people who rediscovered the magic in these hills. Do take time off to visit the Law's Falls and St. Catherine Falls and also the vantage points like Lamb's Rock, Dolphin's Nose and Lady Canning's Seat.

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary
(65 km)

About 65 km away is this sanctuary that's home to elephants, gaur, macaque, langur, sloth bear, barking deer, and giant flying squirrel. There is also a rich avian population - peacock, jungle fowl, Malabar whistling thrush, magpie robin, spotted babbler, barbet, hornbill, bulbul. Spotting animals is rare, but the thick forest amidst towering peaks makes it worth the effort. Accommodation is available in Mudumalai.
