Rajaji National Park

Elephant's that you will never forget

Compared to its up-country neighbour Corbett, Rajaji National Park comes off, rather unfairly, as it?s poor cousin. Most pilgrims flocking to Haridwar, or trekkers keen on higher altitudes, bypass this undiscovered gem. But there are side benefits to being forgotten, and the light human traffic in Rajaji has meant that the wilderness has blossomed unmolested.
Corbett is India's oldest National Park, whereas Rajaji is a mere youngster that was created just 20 years ago, out of the three adjoining wildlife sanctuaries of Chilla, Rajaji and Motichur. Covered in beautiful rambling forests of sal and amaltas and bisected by the Ganga and its multitude of tributaries, the Park is home to over 500 wild elephants, as well as chital, barking deer, wild boar, jackals and even leopards and bears. The wide, flat river valley which runs through the park is an ideal place to spot animals as they come down to the water's edge to drink, or gather at dusk at their favourite salt lick. Sometimes, the damp ground near the river's edge is transformed into a shimmering carpet as thousands of butterflies gather to drink.

Where to Stay
GMVN Tourist Guest House
GMVN Tourist Guest House is close to the main entrance to the park, surrounded by pretty lawns where deer often graze at night. The decidedly unpicturesque hydroelectric plant is nearby but, happily, it's not very visible from the guest house itself. The accommodation in the main building is fairly standard government fare clean, unpretentious, non fussy rooms with or without a/c. However, it also has six huts in the grounds outside, which are altogether more fun as well as being cheaper.

Wildbrook Retreat
Wildbrook Retreat is a recent and welcome addition to the park, set in a remote site overlooking a rushing river, far from anywhere. The site consists of 4 safari tents and 5 cottages. With their own solar panels and eco-friendly toilets, Wildbrook aims to blend in peacefully with its natural surroundings and offers a warm welcome to visitors who do likewise. In addition to evening barbecues, visitors can take guided birdwatching tours, fishing trips (bring your own rods, but permits can be organised on advance notice), trek to local beauty spots, and ride the mountain bikes for hire.
