Historic Ride
Why not chuck up the idea of driving to Alwar in favour of chugging down? Particularly given the fact that the oldest broad-gauge steam locomotive could be pulling your specially built chair-car coach for the duration of the six-hour journey from Delhi to Alwar.
The Fairy Queen was built in 1855 by the British firm Kinston, Thompson & Hewitson. Maintained in gleaming spit-and-polish condition, it is the pride of Indian Railways who, in a joint-venture with Rajasthan Tourism, have packaged two-day trips in a 50-seater wagon as a complete holiday experience for Sariska. The Fairy Queen departs from Delhi Cantt station at 10 am to reach Alwar at 4 pm. The six-hour journey is accompanied by lunch and snacks on board and views of pristine countryside. Once at Alwar, you are whisked off by coach to Sariska. The following morning, you are escorted through the National Park on a jeep safari. Following that and breakfast, you leave for Alwar once more, to board the Fairy Queen on the slow return chug to Delhi. Contact the Railway Museum (Tel: 011-26881816, 26880939) in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi for details. |
