Colonial Charm

The British loved the town for its heavenly climate, scented pines and rhododendron forests, green pastures and snowcapped peaks. They dotted it with grand buildings and beautiful mansions. Come summer and the entire government officers, menial staff, files and cabinets would troop here. And Shimla became the Summer Capital of British India. The tradition continues even today, though unofficially. As the mercury begins its upward climb, the plains people too head northwards to Shimla for a reprieve from the sun. This mother of all hill towns finds something to offer everyone honeymooners, adventure enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those with a colonial hangover.

To See & Do
Must See, Must Do
  • The best way to get to Shimla is take the narrow-gauge train from Kalka. It's a mad rush and takes some 6 hours, but there are 103 tunnels and fantastic views.
  • Find a vantage point on the Ridge and make yourself comfortable. There?s no better place to soak in the sun and watch Shimla go about its day than from here.
  • Lace up and walk around. Nature has been very partial to Shimla, so explore every corner, especially the Glen Forest and Summer Hill.
  • Buy the famous Himachali cap that comes in vivid colors. And of course the wonderful rhododendron juice.
  • Shopping at Lakkar Bazaar for woodcraft is de rigueur.
  • If here in winter, then do ski and ice-skate. It doesn't matter if you can't. The fun is in trying to.

Adventure
Fishing Drive 43 km to Tattapani for mahaseer fishing; for catching trout you'll have to go further, about 110 km, to Rohru. Fishing rods are available for hire locally. Trekking The Shimla-Kinnaur region offers exciting trekking opportunities. Two common and easy trails are the Shimla-Kulu via Jaloni Pass (66 km) and Shimla to Kulu via Bashleo Pass (56 km). A slightly longer one is from Sarahan to Sangla (106 km). There are enough forest houses, and PWD guest houses along the way to put you up for the night. The trekking season is May to October. Skiing The skiing season extends from January to mid-March, obviously subject to snowfalls. HPTDC organises skiing courses at Narkanda (65 km away).
