To See & Do
Silvassa is a meeting of two roads, with the Silvassa-Naroli Road acting as the 'x' axis and MG Road as the 'y'. Everything you need to deal with can be found on these roads, with the junction being the heart of the city, where all the department stores, electronics and liquor shops, hotels and restaurants are located. The town's name is Portuguese for woods and glades. Though there?s little trace of either in the colonial capital itself, as soon as you drive out of town into the sylvan folds of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, you'll be back in the bosom of Mother Nature.

One of the more obvious reminders of Portuguese rule is Our Lady of Piety Church on Naroli Road. With its tall steeple, the building is most unlike the churches of Daman and the flamboyant basilicas and cathedrals of Goa.

There are few places in India where you can see lions that aren?t caged, and Silvassa is proud to be one of them, thanks to the initiative of the territory?s Forest Department. They shipped three lions from Gujarat?s Gir Sanctuary to Silvassa and put them up in the lush environs of the Lion Safari Park here. For lion safaris, contact the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Forest Department of Dadra and Nagar Haveli (0260-2643594/ 045 (closed in monsoons).

Love in Silvassa |

The scene that greets you at Vanganga Lake and Island Garden, 6 km from Silvassa, is straight out of a kitschy picture postcard, complete with private kiosks in which silly things can be said with no fear of anyone else hearing... Wooden bridges, a sea of flowers, thatched huts, paddleboats on the lake... No wonder Silvassa is a favoured post-wedding destination.
Timings Closes 12-2 pm and Tuesdays.
More such fun can be had at Pipariya Van. Hirwa Van Gardens, named after the local tribal deity Hirwa, is mainly for kids. It has a mini zoo with lots of birds, monkeys, and even pythons and crocodiles that'll give them something to talk about in school on Monday. Both Pipariya and Hirwa are on the Silvassa-Dadra Road.
Entry fee: Nominal; Timings: Sunrise to set; Mondays closed.
