(Singapore)

From the opium dens of the past to the hi-tech wizardry of today.

Singapore has traded in its rough-and-ready opium dens and pearl luggers for towers of concrete and glass, and its steamy rickshaw image for hi-tech wizardry, but you can still recapture the colonial era with a Singapore Sling under the languorous ceiling fans at Raffles Hotel.

At first glance, Singapore appears shockingly modern and anonymous, but this is an undeniably Asian city with Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions from feng shui to ancestor worship creating part of the everyday landscape. It's these contrasts that bring the city to life.

Entertainment & Night Life

Avoid swilling over-priced Singapore Slings in hotel lobbies and drink in one of Chinatown's groovy bars, or head to a Mohamed Sultan Rd club to bust some moves. The live music scene is dismal, unless cover bands, muzak-flavoured jazz or Richard Clayderman-style piano classics are your thing. It's slowly improving though and, while rare, blues, jazz and indie bands play in various pubs and clubs around the city.

Liquid Room
  (chillout)

Liquid Room is positively tiny, but don't let size put you off. This is Singapore's most progressive dance space, hosting some of the island's best DJs including satirical cultural observer X'ho. If dancing isn't tempting you, opt for the groovy lounges. The candlelit outdoor area is a great chill-out spot featuring 'downtempo' DJs.

Gotham Penthouse
  (club/disco)

Dark and dripping with cool, the new kid on the club scene is making some noise with dance and techno tracks. There is a loungy Shag Room for some downtime or you can stare blissfully at the eerily lit tanks of jellyfish.

Bar Sá Vanh
  (bar)

By night this bar is filled with glowing lights and dusky shadows. Gorgeous svelte things flit by the goldfish pond, ex-pats guzzle beer from sunken lounges, platters of Asian tapas make the rounds, chilling tunes snake into the dark - all under the watchful eyes of Buddha himself.
