Jai Mata Di

More things are wrought by prayer than the world dreams of. And the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi gives credit to this famous line of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poetry. Sheer faith brings in multitudes of people of all ages, races and religions to kowtow before the Goddess, who showers her grace on each of them and grants them their wishes. The pilgrimage requires great fortitude, both physical and mental, as you have to climb mile after mile, uphill, before getting a glimpse of the Goddess. But as they say tough times never last, tough people do and millions of people make this journey successfully, year after year. So can you.

Shopping
Religious kitch and bric-a-brac are sold at the souvenir shops operated by the Shrine Board at Bhawan, Sanjichhat, Adhkuwari, Katra bus stand and at Vaishnavi Dham (Jammu). You can pick up chunris (long strips of colourful cloth in cotton and silk), saris and shawls which are offered to the goddess. Then there are photographs, songs in audio cassettes and CDs that are hugely popular. The Shrine Board has recently begun the sale of gold and silver coins of guaranteed purity. Not only are these coins engraved with images of the holy shrine, but they are put up for sale after being placed at the Goddess feet. You can buy these at the prashad counter just outside the main shrine and at all the banks at Bhawan. The rates depend on the denomination chosen and the prevailing gold/silver rates.
