Life is a beach

When you fall short of words you begin to spout poetry. Sounds illogical, but when you are the only soul sitting on a beach under a canopy of stars with just thundering waves and a lonely lighthouse for company, believe me, it?s easy. Life truly is a beach. I hit upon this truth early one morning on the sands of Vengurla's Sagareshwar Beach, as the first light began etching out the world around and the soft sand took on a golden hue. With its white foaming surf, deep blue sea and a backdrop of swaying green palms, Sagareshwar is a picture postcard setting for a Me, myself and I kind of vacation.

And Sagareshwar, as the saying goes, is just the tip of the iceberg. Vengurla?s coastline is dotted with some of the most exotic and virgin beaches in Maharashtra. This small coastal town portrays the quintessential beauty of the Konkan: beautiful seashore, thick coconut groves and small undulating hills a veritable treasure chest of myriad shades of green.

Where to Stay

One of the prime reasons why Vengurla has not developed into a tourist hot-spot is the lack of accommodation. There are no beachfront resorts or mid- or up-market hotels. Stay options are limited to a few functional lodges and budget hotels either around the ST Bus Stand or on the main road, which don't accept credit cards. Quite a few locals let out rooms to tourists. Shopkeepers in the main market or around the ST Bus Stand should be able to guide you to such houses.

	Sagar (Sea-facing) PWD Guest House

	1 VIP, 1 ordinary room Facilities: Room service Sawantwadi Reservations PWD Head Office, Moti Talav, Sawantwadi. Tel: 02363-272214 (Accommodation bookings done here; before proceeding to Vengurla, collect pass from this office). The PWD Guest House has the most amazing location. Perched on a rocky outcrop, halfway up the hillock housing the lighthouse, the guest house faces the open sea, with Vengurla Jetty down below on the left and the hill rising on the right. One can spend hours sitting in the verandah, watching the waves crash against the rocks below. Unfortunately, the rooms are let out only on prior booking at the PWD Head Office in Sawantwadi and even then only to those who have contacts in the department or the government. Even if you can't pull strings and manage a room, the guest house is worth a visit for meals. A simple wholesome Konkani thali complete with sol kadi (vegetarian Rs 25 and non-vegetarian Rs 35) is served here, but you have to inform the caretaker at least two hours in advance. 	Samir (Near Fruit Research Centre) Camp Area

	Hotel Laukik (At Vengurla Market) Sarla Sadan, Ram Maruti Road
