The Grange
This imposing castle-like building in Yercaud was built by a former British Collector of Salem, MD Cockburn. However, the Grange is famous not for its founder but for a distinguished guest from Madras who frequently took weekend breaks in Yercaud.
Robert Clive worked as a clerk in the East India Company's office in Madras. Clive lived and worked at Fort St George, just off the bay which brought only some respite every afternoon from a heat the Englishman could bearly tolerate. It is said that Clive grew so miserable and homesick that he tried to kill himself, but the gun failed to fire. Perhaps those breaks up in cool Yercaud had something to do with Clive's eventual recovery from perennially depressed to commander of the British forces. What we do know for sure is that he went on to win India for the Empire in the historic Battle of Plassey. Which goes to show what wonders rejuvenating weekend breaks can do for your career. |
